Sinterklaasgedichten.ai is extremely popular: hundreds of thousands of poems and thousands of users per minute
Sinterklaasgedichten.ai combines technology and tradition by using AI to help hundreds of thousands of people write personal Santa Claus poems.

Sinterklaasgedichten.ai, a digital help link launched by AI.nl and ADC, has exploded in use this year. The online tool helps Dutch people write creative and personal Sinterklaas poems.

Sinterklaasgedichten.ai addresses a common problem: not everyone has the time or desire to write elaborate Sinterklaas poems, and the use of tools like ChatGPT can be a barrier for some. The help letter offers a simple solution: users only have to enter a short description about the recipient, and the tool generates a creative first start for a poem within seconds.

An initiative born from tradition and innovation

According to Remy Gieling of AI.nl, the idea originated with a visit to OpenAI, just before the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022. β€œOne of the engineers, Boris, used a language model to generate a Sinterklaas poem because, as a group of Dutch people, we were there in the run-up to December 5. That moment inspired us to take this Dutch further icon with AI,” says Gieling.

Tom van der Woude from Amsterdam Data Collective (ADC) adds: β€œThe steam literally comes from the server park. The tool sometimes processes thousands of requests per minute. It's fantastic to see technology breathe new life into this traditional part of the Sinterklaas party.”

‍Source of inspiration

Although the human touch is still important for a truly personal poem, the tool appears to be enormously helpful in taking the first step. β€œWe get feedback from many users that they are inspired by the tool and then enjoy writing themselves,” says Gieling.

A tool for everyone β€” often with a sense of humour

Although most users can use the tool intuitively, not everyone appears to be digitally proficient. β€œWe even get emails from people, often elderly people, who send their entire prompt to us asking them to generate the poem,” Gieling laughs. β€œIt shows how widely the tool is being embraced.”

No data storage, but huge impact

Sinterklaasgedichten.ai does not store any personal information, but it does see that user statistics go through the roof. β€œIt is now impossible to keep track of the number of poems generated,” says Van der Woude. β€œThe popularity underlines that AI can be accessible and helpful, even for something as traditional as Santa Claus.”

With Sinterklaasgedichten.ai, AI.nl and ADC show how technology can contribute to maintaining culture, while bringing innovation. This year shows once again: even a traditional Dutch tradition can flourish with a little help from AI.
