Where do you start with AI? Use the Dartboard Method
AI can be used in almost any part of your organization

More and more companies want to use AI (artificial intelligence) to improve their processes, save time and work more efficiently. Nevertheless, we often hear the same question coming up during lectures and training courses:

“What use case should I start with?”

An understandable question, because the range of options is overwhelming. After all, AI can be used in almost every part of your organization: from customer service to administration, from marketing to logistics.

But how do you choose the right entrance? The surprising answer: maybe you don't have to choose.

The dartboard method: just get started

At The AI Group, we often use what we call the dartboard method. The idea is simple:

  1. Write down 10 possible processes or use cases.
  2. Stick it to a dart board.
  3. Throw a dart.
  4. Start the process where the arrow lands on.

Of course, this is partly with a wink, but the underlying message is serious: don't wait for the perfect use case. Start somewhere.

Why this works

Many organizations are stuck in the research phase. They analyze, compare, plan... but don't implement. A shame, because AI is pre-eminently a technology where you you learn as you go. By starting small, you will learn how AI works in your organization, what is needed in terms of data and processes, and where the biggest impact can be achieved.

Moreover: as long as the process has something to do with cognitive work (think typing, reading, analyzing) or a lot of manual effort cost, there is a good chance that AI can add value.

Examples of processes you can start with

  • Automatically summarize or reply to emails
  • Automatically process invoices
  • Categorize and prioritize customer inquiries
  • Automate data entry
  • Generate meeting minutes

So it's not about finding the perfect AI use case, but about to get moving.

Conclusion: Start now, perfect later

AI is no longer a thing of the future — it's here now. And your organization can already reap the benefits today. But then you have to take the first step. So grab that dartboard (figuratively if necessary), choose a process, and get to work.
