Over 12,000 AI tools: where and how to get started?

Since the groundbreaking introduction of ChatGPT, the number of AI tools has grown exponentially to over 12,000. At the time of writing, hundreds more are added every week. This diverse suite of tools, ranging from Fireflies for capturing call reports to Gamma for presentations and HeyGen for video translations, represents a remarkable advance in integrating AI into various aspects of our work.
One of the most notable developments is the integration of generative AI into everyday software such as Outlook, Word, and Excel, with the launch of Microsoft's Copilot and similar initiatives from tech giants like Google. This integration makes everyday software smarter, leading to a significant increase in efficiency and effectiveness in the workplace.
But amidst this excitement about the possibilities of AI tools, it's important to also recognize their limitations. Standard AI tools are often designed to automate specific tasks, such as making presentations or analyzing CVs, and are not necessarily suitable for streamlining entire processes.
In addition, effective use of these tools often requires a certain amount of technical skill, which means that not all team members can benefit from them immediately without training. In addition, the tools can sometimes be difficult to integrate into existing work processes, so they are quickly overlooked after an initial period of use.
Another important consideration is data security. Since many of these tools process sensitive information, it's essential to consider the risks of sharing data with small, unknown companies.
Despite these challenges, AI tools are certainly valuable for individual employees who want to solve specific problems. However, for organizations that are looking for solutions at the team or organizational level, customized AI integration can often be more effective.
It is therefore advisable to make a thorough analysis of how AI can best be deployed within the organization, taking into account the conditions and its possible impact. This process is described in detail in our new book “AI Strategy Handbook”.
In short, while standard AI tools can certainly be useful, it's crucial to use them properly and strive for an integrated approach that meets the organization's specific needs.
