    The term Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is appearing more frequently at companies leading the AI revolution from OpenAI to Palantir. These are technical specialists who don't work in a secluded lab but sit directly at the table with clients. They combine deep knowledge of AI models with keen business insight, building solutions that deliver immediate value.

    Instead of spending months discussing what should be built, a Forward Deployed Engineer develops a working prototype within days. They test, learn, and improve continuously. OpenAI describes their role aptly: “Embed deeply with users to solve high-leverage problems.”

    This embedded way of working ensures that organizations don't get stuck in proof-of-concepts, but develop concrete applications that make a difference.

They know how context engineering works, how to orchestrate multi-agent systems, and how to add guardrails to ensure safety.
