Advertising in ChatGPT: sponsored cards, agent checkout, and the Agentic Commerce Protocol
OpenAI switched on ads inside ChatGPT on 9 February 2026 and opened its self-serve Ads Manager on 5 May. In parallel, the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) — co-authored by OpenAI, Stripe and Meta — lets AI agents complete purchases inside the chat. This guide explains how to position your brand across both surfaces: paid and agent-native.
Since early 2026, a second major shift is playing out in how consumers discover products through AI. Where 2024 and 2025 were about visibility inside generative answers — the GEO story we covered in our Generative Engine Optimization guide — 2026 adds a commercial layer on top. Advertisers can now appear as paid placements inside ChatGPT, and at the same time the Agentic Commerce Protocol makes it possible to close a sale directly from within an AI conversation.
This guide, built by the strategists at ai.nl, combines the latest facts from OpenAI's own documentation with the field experience from our Agentic Commerce training and 600+ enterprise programmes. It covers both the paid track (sponsored cards, Ads Manager, OAIQ pixel, CPC/CPM/CPA bidding) and the organic agent track (ACP, Instant Checkout, product feeds). The result is a single, coherent picture of where and how your brand becomes both visible and buyable inside ChatGPT in 2026.
From GEO to paid: why ChatGPT ads finally arrived
Sam Altman famously called ads inside ChatGPT "a last resort" in 2024. Eighteen months later, on 16 January 2026, OpenAI published Our approach to advertising and expanding access to ChatGPT, announcing plans to experiment with paid placements. On 9 February 2026 the first group of US users actually started seeing sponsored cards beneath ChatGPT answers — coverage came from Ars Technica, Business Insider and 9to5Google among others.
OpenAI's core rationale: ChatGPT reaches more than 700 million weekly users in 2026, and running frontier models is expensive. Ads are the most scalable path to keep the free tier financially sustainable. At Cannes Lions 2026 OpenAI pitched ChatGPT as "a whole new channel for marketers" and projected around $100 billion in ad revenue by 2030. Rivals Anthropic and Google Gemini keep their chatbots ad-free — a positioning that OpenAI is deliberately playing against.
What is a ChatGPT ad exactly?
A ChatGPT ad is a clearly labelled sponsored card rendered under an AI answer whenever the conversation carries commercial intent. Ask ChatGPT for a good long-distance running shoe and it will first produce its regular answer, then show one or more sponsored product or brand cards below. The AI response itself is not altered — OpenAI has explicitly committed to that to protect user trust.
Based on OpenAI's documentation and independent analyses by Martech LLC and Choice OMG, the core properties are:
- Placement: below the AI answer, only when the query has commercial intent (product, service, provider).
- Audience: during the pilot, only free-tier users (ChatGPT Free and ChatGPT Go). Paying Plus, Pro, Team and Enterprise seats remain ad-free.
- Labelling: every card carries a Sponsored label plus an info icon linking to OpenAI's ads policy.
- Effect on the answer: OpenAI is explicit that the model's response is not changed by which brands advertise.
- Geographies: live in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand; per Valor International Brazil and Mexico are next in line.
Ads Manager, bidding models and pricing
On 10 April 2026 the OpenAI Ads Manager rolled out to select partners. On 5 May 2026 it opened to all US advertisers with no minimum spend. On 24 June 2026, per Digiday, OpenAI turned on cost-per-action (CPA) bidding.
The three bidding models available mid-2026:
| Model | You pay for | Starting bid (indicative) | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPM (Reach) | Every 1,000 impressions | $25 – $60 CPM (default max bid $60) | Brand awareness, category launch |
| CPC (Clicks) | Each click to a landing page | $3 – $5 starting bid | Traffic, mid-funnel, similar to Google Ads |
| CPA (Actions) | Each defined action (purchase, lead, signup) | From CPA target, limited beta | Performance campaigns with proven conversion |
The auction is a relevance-weighted second-price auction inside OpenAI's own ad stack: the winning advertiser pays one cent above the runner-up bid, weighted by user relevance. There is no public rate card; GPT Ads AI publishes observed ranges.
Measuring with the OAIQ pixel
To optimise campaigns, OpenAI offers the OAIQ pixel and a Conversions API. Advertisers place the pixel on their own site (comparable to a Meta Pixel) or push server-side events through the API. That lets you attribute ChatGPT clicks to site visits, sign-ups and purchases and configure custom conversions. Without the pixel, measurement is limited to in-platform metrics: impressions, clicks and cost.
Cannes 2026: enthusiasm and scepticism
At Cannes Lions 2026 OpenAI pitched ChatGPT hard as a new channel. The Drum and Marketing Dive reported that early CPMs of $60 halved within ten weeks, and that most brands are still cautious about budget commitments. The 2026 picture: the pilot works, but there is no proven ROAS benchmark yet. Early advertisers who instrument the OAIQ pixel now build a real head start for when the auction gets tighter.
The organic track: the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)
In parallel with the ads launch, OpenAI is building a second commercial surface: the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). It is an open standard co-maintained by OpenAI, Stripe and Meta — first announced on 29 September 2025 in Buy it in ChatGPT: Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol and Stripe's press release. The latest spec version (30 January 2026) lives on GitHub.
ACP defines how an AI agent can complete a purchase with a merchant on a user's behalf. Four building blocks:
- Product Feed Spec — a standardised schema for product catalogs (developers.openai.com/commerce/specs).
- Agentic Checkout — REST endpoints to open, update and complete a checkout session from an agent.
- Delegated Payments — a Stripe-powered flow in which the user pre-authorises the agent to pay on their behalf.
- Merchant Attribution — orders land as if the customer had visited your site directly: your order ID, your customer email, your support and returns.
The first implementation lets US ChatGPT users buy directly from Etsy merchants, with Shopify announced as the next major integration partner. On 6 March 2026 Digital Commerce 360 reported that OpenAI is partially re-aligning its own Instant Checkout surface toward retailer apps inside ChatGPT — a variant in which the brand controls its own UI and flow. For European brands, ACP remains the primary standard to become agent-ready, even as the consumer-facing surface keeps evolving.
Product feeds in practice
For commerce leaders the Product Feed Spec is usually the first concrete workstream. In short:
- Feed type: full snapshot of your entire catalog as the source of truth, recommended cadence daily.
- Formats: parquet (preferred) or CSV.
- Delivery: push over SFTP to OpenAI, with fields for price, stock, variants, shipping countries, return policy and seller context.
- API:
POST /product_feedscreates a feed,GET /product_feeds/{id}returns metadata; promotions and individual products have their own endpoints. - Access: onboarding is currently invite-only for approved partners — merchants apply through the Get Started form.
Paid and organic: one strategy in four layers
The mistake many brands make in 2026 is treating this as a choice: ads or agent integration. In practice the two tracks reinforce each other and belong in one plan. In our Agentic Commerce training and consulting engagements we use a four-layer model:
Layer 1 — GEO foundation
First, make sure your brand is even mentioned in the organic AI answer. This is classic GEO work: factual content, structured data, llms.txt, strong entity signals, and crawler access for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ClaudeBot. Without this foundation, every ad dollar is a detour.
Layer 2 — ACP and product feed
Next, connect your catalog via the ACP product feed or via your Shopify/Stripe integration. That way your products appear in ChatGPT's shopping surfaces and related agents, with accurate prices, stock and delivery data. For European brands this involves work on feeds, VAT logic and delivery terms per country.
Layer 3 — Paid placements
Run controlled CPC or CPA campaigns in Ads Manager with the OAIQ pixel live. Start small and measure not only click-through CPA but incremental lift: how many of these conversions would have happened without the ad? European advertisers ideally wait for the pilot to open in EU markets, but prepare creatives, feeds and measurement now.
Layer 4 — Brand and policy governance
Decide who controls what AI says about your brand, how you handle wrong claims (hallucinations), how AI-driven sales are booked and legally handled (think returns and warranty under ACP), and how this fits within the EU AI Act. See our Responsible AI Use guide and EU AI Act briefing.
What this means for European brands
Even though the ChatGPT Ads pilot is not formally live in Europe as of mid-2026, European brands feel the impact today: international ads are visible to European users shopping in English inside ChatGPT, and ACP integrations are global. Concrete actions for European teams:
- Audit your visibility in ChatGPT answers for your top 20 commercial queries — both local-language and English.
- Pick your ACP partner: integrate through Shopify or Stripe, or build a custom agentic-checkout implementation?
- Prepare your feed — often pure PIM data work using existing product information.
- Plan your ads launch based on the country-by-country pilot rollout. Make sure the OAIQ pixel is already deployed when access opens.
- Train your marketing and commerce team. Our Agentic Commerce training is built for exactly this dual track, and pairs well with the ChatGPT training and the AI Agents training for the GEO foundation.
Advertising in ChatGPT is no longer a standalone channel in 2026; it is one piece of a broader agentic-commerce programme. Brands that now learn how sponsored cards, ACP and Instant Checkout fit together will hold a structural advantage once the pilot reaches Europe and competitors follow.
Veelgestelde vragen
Are ChatGPT ads live in Europe yet?+
Not formally. Sponsored cards inside ChatGPT have been live for free-tier users in the United States since 9 February 2026, and the self-serve Ads Manager opened globally to US advertisers in May 2026. Canada, Australia and New Zealand are also part of the pilot, and OpenAI has announced Brazil and Mexico as the next markets. European rollout is expected in the second half of 2026, with GDPR and EU AI Act compliance shaping the pace. European brands that already target international English-speaking audiences can start building visibility now via a US Ads Manager entity.
What do ChatGPT ads cost?+
OpenAI publishes no rate card. Based on observed bidding, mid-2026 CPMs sit between 25 and 60 US dollars with a default max bid of 60 dollars. CPC starting bids move between 3 and 5 dollars per click, and cost-per-action bidding is in beta for select advertisers. The auction is a relevance-weighted second-price auction, so your actual clearing price depends on the runner-up bid and the relevance score of your creative and landing page — better relevance means lower effective cost.
What is the difference between ChatGPT ads and the Agentic Commerce Protocol?+
ChatGPT ads are paid sponsored cards below an AI answer that generate visibility and traffic. The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is an open standard from OpenAI, Stripe and Meta that lets an AI agent actually purchase products from a merchant on a user's behalf without leaving the chat. Ads are about visibility and attention; ACP is about transaction and fulfilment. Both can run standalone, but the strongest outcome comes when your brand is available through ads and via an ACP product feed and agentic checkout at the same time.
How do I qualify for ChatGPT Instant Checkout?+
Onboarding for ChatGPT Instant Checkout and the accompanying product feed is currently invite-only for approved partners. US Etsy merchants were first; Shopify integrations are announced. Merchants apply through the Get Started form at developers.openai.com/commerce/guides/get-started. You then implement the Product Feed Spec — usually a daily full snapshot over SFTP in parquet or CSV — and the agentic-checkout endpoints from the 30 January 2026 ACP specification. Payment settlement runs through Stripe in the reference implementation.
How do I measure the impact of ChatGPT ads?+
OpenAI provides the OAIQ pixel and a Conversions API to attribute clicks, sign-ups and purchases to ChatGPT campaigns, similar to the Meta Pixel. For serious measurement we advise three steps: deploy the OAIQ pixel and Conversions API on your site, define custom conversions per campaign objective, and measure incremental lift by running periodic geo- or user-level holdouts. Without the pixel, measurement is limited to in-platform impressions, clicks and cost — sufficient for tests, insufficient for performance optimisation.
Can ChatGPT mention my brand without me paying?+
Yes — and that remains the most important visibility channel. Ads sit below the answer, but the answer itself comes from ChatGPT's organic synthesis of sources retrieved via retrieval-augmented generation. This is the domain of Generative Engine Optimization: factual content, structured data, strong entity signals, crawler access for GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot, and off-site authority. Ads also perform better when you are already organically visible, because OpenAI's auction weighs relevance into the clearing price.
Is there a risk in advertising on an AI platform that can hallucinate?+
Yes, and it requires active governance. Two risks stand out: hallucinations where ChatGPT makes incorrect claims about your brand or product, and mis-matching where your ad appears next to context that clashes with your brand values. OpenAI commits to not letting advertisers influence the answer, but hallucinations in the underlying model remain possible. Serious brands should set up a monitoring process for AI-generated brand claims and embed it in existing AI governance in line with the EU AI Act — which is exactly what we cover in our Responsible AI Use training.
