    The content of our sessions comes from published research and official documents, not press releases. This is the baseline we work from, and we refresh it for every session.

    Error correction

    Error rates are finally dropping

    Google published a chip (Willow) in Nature that stays below the surface-code error threshold: more qubits now means fewer errors. A July 2026 follow-up used an AI model to recalibrate the chip in real time, pushing the logical error rate to roughly 7.7 in 10,000 per cycle.

    Roadmaps

    IBM aims at 2029, Quantinuum ships today

    IBM calls 2026 the year of first quantum-advantage examples and promises an error-corrected machine, Starling, in 2029 — explicitly an intention, not a guarantee. Quantinuum launched Helios (98 qubits) commercially in November 2025, with Amgen, BMW and JPMorganChase among its first customers.

    Encryption

    The standards already exist

    In August 2024 NIST finalised three post-quantum standards (ML-KEM, ML-DSA and SLH-DSA). There is no longer a technical excuse to wait: the work now is inventory, prioritisation and migration.

    Regulation

    Europe and the Netherlands set the clock

    The European Commission and member states published a joint migration roadmap in June 2025, with the highest-risk category first in line. In December 2024 the Dutch AIVD, CWI and TNO released the second edition of their PQC migration handbook, with an explicit warning about 'harvest now, decrypt later'.

    Quantum × AI

    'Quantum AI' is still research

    There is still no demonstrated quantum advantage for mainstream machine learning; recent research shows promised speed-ups evaporate in realistic scenarios. The reverse direction is productive already: AI helps calibrate quantum chips and spot errors.

    Netherlands

    Delft is on the world map

    In July 2026 QuTech added Tuna-17 to Quantum Inspire, an open-architecture superconducting processor usable worldwide. On top of that, a EuroHPC quantum computer is being procured to be hosted by SURF in the Netherlands.

      Standards and handbook

      NIST publishes the post-quantum standards (August). AIVD, CWI and TNO update the Dutch migration handbook (December).

    2. 2025

      European migration roadmap

      EU member states and the Commission agree a phased timeline for the move to quantum-safe cryptography.

    3. 2026

      First quantum-advantage claims

      Vendors claim the first practical examples, almost always combined with classical supercomputers. Telling a demo from an application starts to matter here.

    4. 2029+

      Error-corrected machines

      The year the major roadmaps point to for usable, error-corrected systems. Your crypto migration should be finished by then, not starting.

    Four statements, soberly assessed.

    “Quantum is breaking our encryption now”

    Not true — but relevant

    No machine comes close. The risk sits in stored data: what is intercepted today can still be opened ten or fifteen years from now.

    “Quantum will speed up our AI models”

    Not for now

    For ordinary business data, classical hardware is simply better. The promising applications are in simulating molecules and materials.

    “Topological qubits are a breakthrough”

    Contested

    Microsoft presented Majorana 1 in February 2025 as the first topological processor. Peers publicly questioned the evidence; it is a claim, not an established fact.

    “We will wait until it is ready”

    Risky

    A crypto migration touches certificates, suppliers, devices and software; that takes years. Organisations with long-lived confidential data therefore start now.
